Uniflite was founded as United Boat Builders in October 1957 by Art 'Papa' Nordtvedt in Bellingham, Washington, starting with small fiberglass runabouts and growing into express cruisers and motor yachts. Uniquely, it built its pleasure boats with fire-retardant resins, and it supplied the U.S. Navy with PBR (Patrol Boat, River) craft used in Vietnam from 1965 to 1972. A North Carolina plant was added in the late 1970s. Uniflite was acquired by Chris-Craft in 1984, which continued the boats under that brand until production ceased in 1989. Founder's son Gary Nordtvedt later founded Norstar Boats.
