History
After World War II, Grumman Aircraft vice-president William Hoffman had the idea of building canoes from the same lightweight aluminum used in Grumman's carrier fighters; the first 13-foot aluminum canoe was produced at the Bethpage, Long Island plant in 1945, with production later centered in Marathon, New York. Grumman canoes became icons — demand peaked at 33,000 sold in 1974 after the film Deliverance featured them. Grumman sold its boat and canoe division to Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) in 1990, and the last Grumman-branded canoe under that lineage was made in 1996. Former managers then formed the Marathon Boat Group, which continues to build Grumman-branded canoes today under a licensing agreement with Northrop Grumman.
