Founded as Glas Laminates in 1958 by Richard 'Dick' Valdes and Maurice V. Threinen — initially producing camper shells and canoes for Sears — the company became Glass Marine Industries and marketed sailboats under the Columbia name. In 1965 it introduced the Columbia 50, then the world's largest fiberglass production sailboat, and by the late 1960s was the world's largest fiberglass sailboat manufacturer. The founders sold to Whittaker; the mid-1980s downturn that also took down Pearson and O'Day ended Columbia's run.
